Mike Buhl

Not that long ago, in the musical micro-climate of Melbourne, Mike Buhl slinked into venues as a new dj with an original take on the sounds de jour. At the time, Chicago and West Coast house filled the airwaves of local boutique clubs and bars. Progressive house was tapering off and Electro began its unrelenting grasp on the Australian club scene. Wired with an ear for a point of difference, Mike drew together the elements that moved him from the local melting pot of styles while keeping his finger on the pulse of overseas. From this, he fused his own blend of tech house and forged ahead as a dj playing sophisticated beats, providing audiences with a preview of what’s now and what’s next. Without feeling confined to regurgitate audio trends of the local scene, Mike powered ahead creating his own sound sphere. Specifically Mike understands and embraces the concept of light and shade, and the journey of the dj’s set as experienced by the audience. The adventure within a Mike Buhl set twists and turns, churns and chills, and entices you through a carefully constructed musical odyssey which is simply based around the hypnotic loop.

This drive to be more than a dj mixing other artists tracks, has seen Mike continue to work harder on his own production as well as the integration of technology into his DJ platform, in order to achieve an exceptional musical standard held in his vision. Tools such as Traktor Scratch and Ableton Live have played a vital role in strengthening his performances, as well as creating the anticipation and build which he is known for. The heady combination of Mike’s intuitive approach to composition along with clever use of equipment – ensures every element has been adjusted to suit Mike’s style.   Currently, Mike’s music resides somewhere between house and techno, which is the perfect realm for his balance between light and shade. While inspired by a medley of electronic artists over the past few decades, the more recent contemporary artists Mike admires are the likes of Efdemin, Mountain People,  2000 and One, Russ Gabriel and of course, many more.

The past year has seen Mike working a lot harder in the studio. Some collaboration with friend and regular studio partner Mic Newman, saw the release of "I Know Your Face" on Berlin's Dirt Crew Recordings, and remix for friend J Nitti on Australian label Vinyl Pusher also receiving plays in Berlin by Dj's such as Moodmusic's Dave DK, and full support from many more. More recently Mike has finished a remix for Melbourne artist Andy Hart on Australian label Beatgeek.   Over the last few years Mike has played across Australia in some of the countries best parties and festivals not to mention a two year stint hosting his own shown on premier dance station Kiss FM. No stranger to the international circuit either, Mike has travelled the globe to headline parties in Italy, Germany and Paris, and is a regular contributer on the Galaktika Records Podcast series.   Mike has recently been working on his new studio and is looking forward to outputting a series of quality records in the near future.
