The next chapter in Australia’s industrial/electronic body music lineage has arrived – Leo James. A mutation of the same strain that pollinated Severed Heads, Single Gun Theory and SPK, Leo’s hypno-machine rhythms worm through throbbing beat and delirious cut ups with a subtle yet hardened hint to his disco past as one half of Canyons.
Self-releasing three 12″s on his Body Language label, Leo James’ DIY tracks have been supported across the high seas by the likes of Trevor Jackson, Suzanne Kraft, Jamie Tiller and Alexis Le-Tan. These six sides of cold heat were followed up by an EP on fast rising Vienna imprint Neubau at the end of 2016. Leo also remixed Subways by the Avalanches. His latest release, Event Horizon, has just been released by cult UK label Berceuse Heroique.
As part of Canyons, Leo recorded ‘Keep Your Dreams’, their balearic-dance opus for Modular, and a seminal 12″ on DFA, while soundtracking New York clubs, Croatian beaches and Australian outdoor festivals. The duo also founded Hole In The Sky, a label that helped launch the careers of psychedelic gods Tame Impala and Pond, and released early H.I.T.S. for Bell Towers and Jacques Renault.
